Consistency clearly the key to a top spot

Europe Class European Championship - Consistency clearly the key to a top spot
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(14-7-2003) Siren SUNDBY, placed second in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings has won the Europe European Championship, which concluded on Friday, in the consistent style she never fails to show.

She scored only two results out of the top five to win the championship by two points from the defending champion Sari MULTALA of Finland. Third overall was Sarah MACKY of New Zealand with the bronze European medal going to Trine ABRAHAMSEN of Denmark, who finished fourth overall.

In very hot, lightish conditions in the Balearics, consistency was clearly the key to a top spot and the first five positions were only truly decided on the final day. MACKY commented about the conditions. ”It has been really really hot, I found it so hard to keep hydrated I was having to drink during the races.`

Current World Champion Sarah BLANCK (AUS) finished sixth overall in a regatta where starting seemed to let her down, often seeing her play catchup in the final few races of the regatta.

One young sailor who had a good regatta was Great Britain’s Laura BALDWIN, who in finishing ninth, had the best placed British result since Shirley Robertson retired from the class to pursue other interests.

A delighted Baldwin commented, `I am speechless! I have been working really hard over the winter training in Palma and have familiarised myself with the conditions. I have also spent two weeks training with some of the top international Europe sailors and this has really pulled my game up. I have exceeded my expectations at the event and am thrilled with the result.`
